First interview date: 23rd November 2022

From protecting our natural environment, to improving the health and wellbeing of our local communities and helping to mitigate against the impacts of the climate emergency, the role of England’s Community Forests and tree planting has never been more important. This makes it a very exciting time to join our passionate and dedicated White Rose Forest team.

Could you be our new Green Streets® project officer?

For this role you will require demonstrable knowledge and experience of developing environmental or economic regeneration projects. You will be qualified to degree level (or equivalent), preferably in a relevant environmentally based field, and direct experience of working in urban tree planting or woodland creation would be beneficial.

The White Rose Forest (WRF), with support from the Community Forest Trust and funding from the Government and private partners, has an ambitious plan to plant seven million trees in North and West Yorkshire by 2025. We have two strategic tree planting programmes that will help us reach this target: Landscapes for Water focusses on woodland creation within key river catchments and Green Streets® on increasing tree cover in urban areas.

Green Streets® aims to improve air quality, make our urban spaces more attractive for businesses and investment, and encourage the uptake of active travel. The programme looks to integrate more natural and semi-natural areas, such as water bodies and green wooded spaces (green and blue infrastructure), into transportation and urban design in North and West Yorkshire.

To deliver the Green Streets® programme and meet our targets, we are looking to recruit a new Project Officer on a fixed term contract until March 2025 (due to funding).

The Green Streets® Project Officer will work as part of the core WRF team to support our partners in the delivery of new trees and woodlands. To do this, the Officer will undertake a pro-active role in identifying new tree planting opportunities and initiatives through mapping analysis, and liaising with public & private landowners and other stakeholders including local authority teams and community organisations.

Other key duties will include drawing up detailed planting plans and supporting schemes through the regulatory approvals process. The Project Officer will undertake site surveys and assessments and have the ability to advise on how to achieve high quality woodland planting and management.

Community and landowner engagement is at the heart of our work and new tree planting projects will aim to engage a wide range of audiences in a variety of ways. It is therefore fundamental that the successful candidate is a confident and clear communicator, with the ability to interact and engage with a variety of diverse community groups and project partners. Outdoor event management experience, including managing volunteers, would be an advantage for this role but is not essential. The successful candidate will be professional and approachable and recognise the importance of building and maintaining successful partnerships to achieve positive outcomes for all.

It is essential that you are fully conversant with Microsoft Office and have a full clean driving licence.
